About Hotplate
Hotplate is changing how people sell food across the US by giving Chefs and Bakers the tools necessary to solo launch and manage a food business online. There are talented people around the world capable of making amazing food, but either due to a lack of awareness, financial constraints, or the daunting overhead costs associated with traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, many never venture into this space independently. Hotplate is fueling a new model of food sales, allowing anyone to create a storefront, announce a sale, and coordinate local pickups with hundreds, or even thousands of customers—all within a 10-minute setup. Our aim is to make the food industry more available to everyone with the desire to enter it, consequently making food more accessible and diverse across the United States.
At our current size, every member of Hotplate has the ability to impact all components of the company in their day-to-day. You will be expected to speak your mind about what, how, and when we build new features, and be challenged to undertake tasks that may fall outside of your comfort zone when the need arises. About the role
We are looking for an experienced, backend-leaning, customer-focused Engineer to join our team. We need someone who has a solid understanding of our tech stack, can effectively model and manage relational databases, is excited to push themselves to solve problems across the entire codebase, and who is also capable of, and interested in, being a generalist.
We encourage you to apply if you're interested in full-stack product development, keen on constantly pushing your boundaries, interested in working in the open, scrappy environment of an early stage startup, and get satisfaction from making complex problems feel simple to the end user.
Upcoming technical or product challenges you could work on include:
- Building up our infrastructure to deal with our spiky traffic
- Upgrading our analytics platform to enable chefs to make better decisions
- Tools for collaboration amongst chefs
- Upgrading our test suite to improve our peace of mind
- Improving our ci/cd pipelines
- Building & revamping product (invoicing, subscriptions, reworking the most used parts of Hotplate)
Our work covers a lot of ground: Invoicing, subscriptions, collaborations, messaging, and managing 10,000% load spikes are just a few things we are working on. We are trying to popularize a new way of selling food, and the road there will be filled with a lot of disparate and interesting problems and ideas.

Responsibilities
- Help ideate, design, and implement new features and infrastructure
- Collaborate with all team members to bring your and their ideas to life
- Work across job functions to create a seamless, intuitive, and customer-friendly product
- Engage directly with chefs and users to gather feedback and provide support
Qualifications
- 3+ years experience in an engineering role
- Does well in a small team environment
- Able to communicate effectively and honestly to all team members
- Seeks to challenge themselves in new projects
- Proficiency with React, Typescript, and NextJs
- Deep knowledge of SQL modeling and managing relational databases
- Experience with public cloud infrastructure
- A knack for solving complex problems with simple, elegant solutions
- Strong interest in full-stack product development

- Previous experience founding a startup, or working at an early stage startup
- Interest in UX and product design
