11.5/12 - for #7, we rarely have oncall duties, so there hasn't been a need to measure or fix its health.

Who are you and what problem are you solving?

Waybridge is a well-funded start-up building a technology platform to significantly streamline the logistics and operations of the multi trillion dollar physical commodities industry. We were founded in September 2019 backed with investment from Venrock and Rucker Park. Our platform is now live with major metals companies and we raised additional capital from existing investors and Craft Ventures in May 2021.

Think about how easy it is for you to purchase something online: you can see various options, filter by different features, and then once ordered, track where your delivery is until it arrives at your doorstep.

It might surprise you that such systems do not yet exist for manufacturers, suppliers, or traders looking to buy or sell raw materials, such as aluminum or copper. Thanks to many challenges involved, particularly due to the market's size, such purchases are currently extremely manual, using a combination of emails, phone calls, and spreadsheets to track purchases, sales, and deliveries.

Who are you after? What experiences do I need?

  • You love building complex products that solve real customer problems.
  • You have a proven track record of taking an idea and making it happen through the entire software development lifecycle.
  • You are comfortable working with ambiguity and value incremental progress over perfection.
  • You have worked directly with customers, product managers, designers and other stakeholders.
  • You have been responsible for your code in production environments.
  • You have worked on some scaling challenges on backend systems.
  • You have an understanding of topics like data modeling, database fundamentals, API design, caching and architecture patterns.
  • You are interested in helping us define engineering process and culture
  • You have experience with some of the tools in our stack (or with similar tools).

Even if you do not fit all of the above points, if you can think you can contribute, you should apply, and we will compensate you based on your experience and ability.

What is your technology stack?

  • Python, Django, GraphQL, and Postgres.
  • React, Relay, and Typescript.
  • AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform.
  • Automated CI/CD with staging and production environments.

What will I be doing day to day?

You will be working with our VP and Directors of Engineering, and the rest of the technology team to build a strong engineering culture.

  • You will design and build the core product, infrastructure, and tools to meet the needs of a complex business.
  • You will work with Product and Design in a highly collaborative and transparent environment.

You should be excited to solve interesting engineering problems, help establish well-designed engineering processes, and ship high-quality, enterprise-level products. Given where we are now, you will be able to start building and contributing from day one and helping to improve our architecture and practices.

Who is the Team?

Our engineering team!

We are currently a team of just over 30 individuals with various backgrounds, skills, and seniorities - from graduates upwards. We have tech experts who have built systems that handle millions of transactions per second, commodity experts with 60 years of combined experience in the industry, and design and product experts who have worked on complex software products for large enterprises.

Our founding team has experience starting businesses in both the commodity and technology spaces and have successfully built companies from the ground up to hundreds of employees.

Our engineering team makes up about half the company, and is distributed, with teammates currently based in Portland, Washington DC, New York, London, and Amsterdam. Currently, we have offices in New York and London, but are open to full-time remote. The New York office is in the greater Flatiron District in Manhattan, and the London office is in Central London. We will always maintain a flexible work from home policy.

We try our best to schedule company or function-wide meetings in the few hours where Europe/US west coast working hours overlap, but occasionally such meetings will be the day for Europe (ex. 6pm) or earlier in the day for US west coast (ex. 7am).

Would I fit in?

Waybridge believes that it's critical to build a team with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Across the company, we are always working to make sure our employees feel valued and included. You can talk to us to find out more, and we can put you in touch with relevant team members if you'd like to speak to someone directly.

  • We have made an effort to encourage people from under-represented backgrounds to apply for open positions at Waybridge, and are constantly evaluating our hiring processes to ensure it is inclusive and equitable.
  • We regularly have workshops and speakers that have helped us discuss challenges around DEI, we have internal channels where team members discuss diversity in tech, and we have a book club where we read and discuss books with a focus on DEI and racial justice. We have an affinity group for women-identifying employees across the company, as well as a smaller group for women-identifying engineers.
  • We have established a rotating DEI taskforce to collect and amplify voices from the whole company, and help channel those voices into action. We’re working with a DEI consultant to help advise our group and provide training on foundational skills related to furthering DEI in the workplace.
  • We want to continue to do better, and we actively engage our team in conversations around how we can improve.

What is your interview process?

Our interviews are entirely remote. We try to be flexible with our schedule for calls and quickly get you through the process.

  1. (30 minutes) An initial call with an engineer. We’ll tell you a bit about us, demo our product if you’re interested, answer any questions you may have, and learn about your background and what you’re looking to do.
  2. (1 hour) A phone screen with another member of our team. We will explore your experience and will ask short technical questions.
  3. (1 hour) An option between a take home exercise with followup discussion, or a live technical screen. We will provide preparation material and context beforehand.
  4. (2 hours) Finally, you will have a 1 hour architecture discussion with an engineer and 2 short (30 minutes) chat sessions to meet a few other team members from engineering, product, design, services, or leadership to allow both sides to meet future teammates.
  5. Offer extended! If you are interested in talking to more potential coworkers or have additional questions, we will also arrange any additional chats for you.

If you have read this far, do drop us a line to say hi!
