Vannevar Labs brings innovative, robust, and scalable software design to the public servants working in defense and national security keeping our country safe.

As a team, we exist because we believe in public service, and we think that our democracy and government improve only if we put serious, collective effort into improving them, including the technology our government uses.

Our flagship product is Decrypt, a software platform for collecting and processing foreign language text data with a UI for enabling users to quickly interpret the data. Decrypt is driving some of our most important military and foreign policy decisions by enabling our government partners to understand and respond to foreign actors in ways previously not possible.

We are a growth startup with investment from Felicis Ventures, DFJ Growth, Aloft VC, General Catalyst, Point72, Costanoa Ventures, and Shield Capital.

Technical Lead - Platform

As Vannevar increases the mission sets we support, we are expanding from one product (Decrypt) to an ecosystem of products. The Platform team is responsible for the platform - the shared services & infrastructure - that powers the product ecosystem. As the Technical Lead, you are someone with deep systems architecture experience who will help set the technical strategy and direction for this team.

You’ll have outsized impact on the Platform’s evolution in support of our developers, forward deployed engineers, and end users. The decisions you make will have a direct impact on the company today and into the future. You know how to balance delivering immediate impact for consumers with designing for future expansions and capabilities.

You should be innovative: willing to take risks, think critically about novel solutions, and advocate for your ideas while seeking feedback and collaboration. You will be making trade-offs as you work to ensure that our systems are prepared to scale — being able to effectively communicate these trade-offs with your teammates is a must.

What You'll Do

  • Build systems that allow deriving value from collections such as 200TB of geospatial data, text and multimedia in over 46 different languages, and other mission related datasets
  • Solve large-scale data synchronization problems, including propagating data between multiple data stores and external systems
  • Develop sampling strategies to filter massive geospatial data to enable rendering on an end-user’s web browser
  • Identify emerging data technologies to support scaling while maintaining low latency reads

Qualifications (Must Haves)

  • 4+ years of professional software development experience – you have worked on systems that are deployed in production environments
  • 2+ years of experience as a technical leader, with ownership over production system architecture
  • A proven ability to work across teams to coordinate and solve engineering problems
  • Experience leveraging distributed data processing to establish robust data pipelines capable of supporting hyperbolic scale
  • Experience with modern backend languages such as Python
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • U.S. Person status is required with the ability to obtain security clearance.

Additional Qualifications (Nice to Haves)

  • Experience building solutions with cloud data warehouses such as Redshift or Snowflake
  • Experience optimizing queries and indices with Postgres
  • Experience performance tuning ElasticSearch clusters and queries
  • Experience with other parts of our stack, including Debezium, Kinesis, OpenSearch, Temporal, Celery, NodeJS, and Python – which are all managed by IaaC on AWS
