11/11 No on-call rota yet. We prioritise app stability so have not yet needed to solve on-call beyond me, the CTO, being on call 24/7.

Today, millions of employees looking for career growth are stuck between bad HR software and impenetrable spreadsheets. There are no career development products that employees and managers really want to use.

That's not good enough. Managers should have the power to support their teams, and anyone should have the opportunity to be the best version of themselves and create careers that they love.

We're building the solution to that. Progression brings clarity to employees around their career growth, and simplicity and scalability to teams as they grow and look to promote and reward employees for their hard work.

That's just the start. Our mission is to help everyone build a career that they love.

That's where you come in.

You'll be joining a small but high performing engineering team with a strong product focus and shipping mindset.

You'll help build features fundamental to the success of the business. You'll be working on a well maintained codebase spread across a Rails app and a React and Tailwind based component library, with good test coverage and well used conventions and patterns.

We have an amazing set of investors, a huge vision and a lot of product to build, so expect masses of autonomy, thinking from first principles and tons of face-time with us as we work together on building an amazing business.

In the next 12 months you'll:

  • Help us get to product market fit by rapidly building rich, interactive features in React, dipping into our Rails backend when needed
  • Collaborate with our designers and product manager to identify, test and iterate new features
  • Help us to iteratively improve our frontend tooling and processes
  • Level up the whole team's frontend skills
  • Ensure a high quality bar for every feature and interaction we ship
  • Contribute to the growth and success of other members of the team through code review, documentation, and mentoring

Your skillset and experience:

  • Several years using React (or similar framework) to develop complex, scalable products
  • Experience managing complex business logic in the frontend
  • Creating delightful interactions and stunning UI
  • Working with and/or building APIs, component libraries and design systems
  • Strong communication and organisational skills — you'll be able to work effectively in teams or work autonomously as needed
  • Some experience working with a backend framework (e.g. Express, Django, Rails) and a willingness to get stuck in to unblock yourself
  • Working closely with designers, product managers and stakeholders

You'll have a great time if you want:

  • To get in on the ground floor of a VC backed, high growth tech company
  • Huge influence over all front end and back end architecture across our current web app, marketing site and any future domains
  • High level goals and a lot of freedom to run
  • To write a lot of code, move fast and also have influence over architecture and tech stack
  • To learn unfamiliar things quickly so you can unblock yourself
  • To work on the most business critical projects, whatever they are

We may not be the right fit if you'd like to:

  • Work in a large product team with lots of other engineers
  • Specialise in one aspect of engineering (e.g API design)
  • Specialise in one language or framework (e.g. Rails or React)
  • Work in an office

Benefits

  • Remote by default. IRL meetups every 8 weeks and a London studio space for folks that want to work in person more frequently
  • Support to find mentors, supporters and peer groups across other portfolio companies.
  • 25 days holiday + public holidays
  • Work from home budget to get setup with the right equipment you need to be productive
  • 20 days "Nomad working" to work from anywhere +/-3 hours from London (more flexibility on request)
  • £1000 training budget for books, courses and conferences

Interview Process

  1. 30 min phone screen with Neil.
  2. 80 min technical interview with 2 of the engineering team. No fizzbuzz, no white boarding, we do situational and experience based questions.
  3. Techncial review: send us a side project, open source contribution, previous take home assessment or do our own take home assessment. We'll review and sometimes choose to do short call to get context and discuss tradeoffs.
  4. 60 min team fit / add interview with 2 other members of the team.

Progression
Careers by design, not by accident
Size:  11-50 employees
